ICSI

ICSI (injection of sperm into an egg), or literally translated from English, the introduction of sperm into the cytoplasm of an egg, is one of the methods of assisted reproductive technologies (ART). Artificial insemination is performed under the control of a high-resolution microscope using micromanipulators and glass micro-instruments such as needles and suction cups.

low (< 5 million/ml) sperm activity in the ejaculate;
low (<1 million/ml) content of motile sperm;
complete absence of sperm in the ejaculate, but they can be obtained by taking material directly from the testicle or its epididymis;
obtaining germ cells from a man's urine in case of retrograde ejaculation;
the presence of a large number of pathologically altered spermatozoa;
high activity (> 50%) of anti-sperm antibodies in semen;
unsuccessful previous IVF;
"older reproductive" (over 38) age of women;
immunological infertility;
use for fertilization of eggs and sperm thawed after cryopreservation;
small (< 5) number of mature eggs.

What is the difference between ICSI and IVF?

IVF is performed "in vitro" (in vitro). Mature eggs and sperm are selected and placed in a common container, where fertilization takes place without the involvement of a doctor.

ICSI, unlike the previous ART method, takes place with the active participation of an embryologist. The mature egg is fixed with a suction cup, and only one selected sperm is injected into it with a glass microneedle.

The higher efficiency of ICSI is due to the careful selection of material - male and female germ cells and direct injection of sperm, which increases the chance of successful fertilization. With ICSI, successful fertilization is observed in 95% of cases. (With traditional IVF, approximately 60-70% of cases are successful).
