Free infertility treatment under the NHSU program
Unfortunately, the dream of becoming parents is not always realizable for some people. According to statistics, every fifth couple in Ukraine faces the problem of conceiving naturally. This is often caused by infertility, which requires special treatment or the use of assisted reproductive technologies.
While in vitro fertilization (IVF) used to be available only at your own expense, today Ukrainian families have the opportunity to take advantage of the state IVF program funded by the National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU).

Who can use free IVF?
To take advantage of free IVF in Ukraine, you must meet certain criteria:
Citizenship of Ukraine or a permanent residence permit in the country. This is due to the fact that the state program is financed from the budget of Ukraine and is aimed at its citizens.
A diagnosis of infertility has been made. A couple or woman must have a reason confirmed by a health care facility why natural conception is not possible.
The state of somatic health and the absence of contraindications to the IVF procedure. Severe somatic or mental illnesses, the quality of the ovaries may be a reason for refusal.
Compliance with all medical and administrative procedures: examination, referral, selection of a clinic that provides infertility treatment services covered by the NHS.
Access to IVF under the state program is provided to couples who are officially married or cohabiting and have a medical diagnosis of infertility.
Readiness to follow the treatment protocol. The couple must be ready to go through the entire treatment cycle, which means following the appropriate schedule and doctor's recommendations.
Pre-fertilization diagnostics “in vitro” can be done free of charge at the institution where you have signed a valid declaration with your family doctor or have a contract for package No. 9 from the NHSU.
So, if you plan to take advantage of the government initiative, it is important to follow the conditions and visit the clinic on time, as the number of places may be limited.
How to get free IVF in Ukraine
Visit a gynecologist or family doctor. He conducts an initial assessment of the state of the partners' reproductive system and refers them for examination.
Diagnosis. It is necessary to do all the tests and undergo examinations to confirm the diagnosis of infertility and have documented conclusions of specialists.
Receiving an electronic referral. The patient needs to take the appropriate referral (the referral code is determined by the program). This is an important document for applying for free IVF - without it, participation in the program is impossible.
Choosing a clinic. The institutions under consideration must have a contract with the NHSU for the treatment of infertility using assisted reproductive technologies.
Visit to a reproductive specialist. The doctor of the chosen clinic is provided with all the necessary documents - the results of examinations, expert opinions, and referrals. If you have had previous attempts at infertility treatment, you should provide their results.
Approval of the candidate. After receiving a positive response from the medical institution and the NHSU, the process of infertility treatment begins. It is important to follow the agreed plan and instructions of the doctors.
Why should you choose a state IVF program?
The state IVF program is a real chance to get high-quality medical care without burdening the budget. Among the main advantages of the initiative:
- Free infertility treatment. Key stages of the program are covered by the state, which significantly reduces the financial burden on the family. The state supports not only young families but also couples who have been trying to become parents for years in vain.
- High efficiency. Clinics operating under the government program usually use modern technologies, have laboratories, experienced reproductive specialists, and demonstrate good success rates.
- Compliance with standards and quality control. Clinics that have signed a contract with the NHSU are required to be accredited and comply with international standards.
- Personalized treatment plan. Program participants are provided with an individualized infertility treatment regimen based on the specifics of each clinical case. They also receive recommendations on lifestyle, nutrition and preparation for pregnancy, which increases the chances of success.
- Treatment in one facility. The ability to go through all stages in one clinic - from diagnosis to embryo transfer. After all, the centers that cooperate with the NHSU have all the necessary doctors: gynecologists, reproductive specialists, embryologists, geneticists.
Such benefits prove that the state IVF program in Ukraine is a real step towards the desired pregnancy. This initiative was created primarily to ensure that infertility is no longer a sentence due to lack of funds.
Stages of free IVF under the medical guarantee program (NHSU)
Participation in the state IVF program in Ukraine requires compliance with a certain algorithm. At the IVMED clinic, the procedure takes place in several clear stages.
Consultation and initial diagnosis
After the visit, patients undergo a consultation with a reproductive specialist who assesses the couple's situation - medical history, examines the results of tests and the conclusions of related specialists. After that, a preliminary action plan is determined.
Protocol selection and ovulation stimulation
The doctor determines the scheme of medical stimulation for the maturation of several eggs at the same time. Follicle growth is monitored using ultrasound and hormonal control. The patient is prepared for a puncture.
Egg collection and fertilization
Eggs are extracted by follicle puncture. In the laboratory, embryologists perform artificial insemination with the partner's sperm using the ICSI method.
Cultivation of embryos
For 3-5 days, embryos develop in special conditions, after which the highest quality ones are selected for further implantation.
Embryo transfer
One or more embryos are transferred into the uterine cavity. The rest can be frozen in a cryobank for later use. Hormonal support is provided for successful implantation.
Early diagnosis and support
12-14 days after the embryo transfer, hCG analysis and ultrasound are performed to diagnose pregnancy. Consultation is provided on the further management of a pregnant woman.
It is worth considering that the number of places (quotas) for free IVF is limited, so you should apply as soon as possible after identifying a medical need. And providing a complete package of documents and careful preparation will help speed up the application process and get a positive response from the NHSU.
What is the age limit for NHS infertility treatment?
The state funding program for artificial insemination has clear age restrictions, primarily for women – up to and including the age of 40. This is due to medical expediency: after this age, most women experience a decline in fertility and an increased risk of complications.
Therefore, in order to increase the effectiveness and safety of the procedure, doctors adhere to the established age recommendations. For men, there are fewer restrictions, but the condition of the sperm and general health are important. However, doctors emphasize that in each case the decision is made individually.
Is it possible to choose a clinic for infertility treatment through the NHS?
The patient has the right to choose a private or public clinic from the list of institutions that have signed an agreement with the NHSU. One of these partners is the leading reproductive center IVMED, which provides free IVF services to patients.
It is important to find out which procedures are included in the list of free services. If a patient wants to receive additional services, such as donation, cryopreservation, or genetic testing without indications, they are paid separately at the clinic’s rates. It is also worth paying attention to the experience of reproductive specialists, the level of laboratory equipment, patient reviews, and the conditions of medical support. After all, even though the procedure is funded by the state, the quality of service is of great importance. Ukraine is steadily moving towards European standards of reproductive medicine, where having a child is not a privilege but a guaranteed right for every family.
What medical conditions give the right to receive infertility treatment under the NHS?
The state IVF program provides free treatment for patients with such diagnoses:
- Female infertility of tubal origin (for example, obstruction of the fallopian tubes).
- Female infertility associated with ovulatory dysfunction (polycystic ovary syndrome, etc.).
- Male infertility is a decrease in the number of spermatozoa, impaired sperm motility, and other factors.
- Immunological infertility is the presence of anti-sperm antibodies that make it impossible to conceive naturally.
- Failed previous IVF attempts.
An important condition is the absence of contraindications to the IVF procedure related to the patient’s general condition. It is necessary to have a conclusion of a medical consultation confirming the legitimacy of participation in the program.
How long to wait for infertility treatment under the NHS program?
The waiting time for the procedure depends on the clinic’s workload and the number of allocated quotas. On average, it is 2 to 6 months. At the same time, patients note that the process is much faster in fertility centers that have established cooperation with the NHS. However, it should be borne in mind that it will take some time to undergo an examination, receive a referral, and prepare for stimulation. The way the body reacts to ovulation stimulation and whether the endometrium is ready to accept the embryo also plays an important role. Therefore, the earlier a problem with fertilization is detected, the sooner the procedure should be started. Delay can lead to a loss of precious time.
Usually, it is possible to start a treatment program faster in clinics that have their own laboratory and do not depend on third-party institutions. This is another argument in favor of specialized centers like IVMED.
Free IVF in Ukraine – proof that medicine is becoming more accessible and that the state truly supports its citizens. If you meet the conditions, have a confirmed diagnosis of infertility and are ready to undergo the procedure, you should take advantage of this government program. Consult a doctor and take the first step towards the birth of your long-awaited child!
Free IVF at the IVMED clinic under the NHS program
State funding for artificial insemination is part of the medical guarantees program implemented by the NHSU. Its goal is to provide couples diagnosed with infertility with access to quality treatment without being limited by financial means. The state covers the costs of IVF, covering the full cycle of the procedure – from the initial consultation and in vitro fertilization (in a test tube) to confirmation of pregnancy.
The peculiarity of this initiative is that it changes the approach: instead of infertility treatment being exclusively commercial, this service becomes a matter of national policy and social support for families. Various clinics participate in the program, including IVMED fertility clinic in Kyiv. As part of the package of services, we provide the entire IVF cycle, and the availability of our own embryological and genetic laboratory, cryobank and the latest equipment guarantees the safety of each stage of the program and a successful outcome.
To take advantage of the state program of medical guarantees for infertility treatment in our clinic, you just need to make an appointment with a reproductive specialist by calling the phone number listed on the IVMED website or by leaving an application. After setting the date of the visit, visit the doctor and enter the treatment protocol, receiving comprehensive support from our specialists in achieving pregnancy.
Thanks to this state program, hundreds of Ukrainian families have already become parents. According to the information provided, in 2024, about 30,400 in vitro fertilization cycles were funded under the program in Ukraine. This demonstrates that the state IVF program is not a formality, but a real opportunity for couples to take advantage of the chance to become parents. It is worth noting that the cost of one IVF cycle in private clinics, depending on the chosen program and the need for additional medical services, can reach up to UAH 100,000 and more, which is unaffordable for most families. That is why the introduction of the free program has become a significant support for couples who have been struggling with infertility for years.
