Testicular biopsy

Testicular biopsy is a diagnostic and therapeutic method in andrology. In reproductive medicine, testicular biopsy is used to obtain male germ cells.

  • fertility disorders due to azoospermia or anejaculation;
  • suspicion of a testicular malignancy;
  • obtaining germ cells for ART.

The IVMED Medical Center uses various types of biopsies:

  • Minimally traumatic - by sampling germ cells with a syringe through a puncture in the skin from the:
    • of testicular tissue - TESA;
    • of the testicular epididymis - PESA.
  • Traumatic - through a small incision in the:
    • testicle - TESE;
    • of the epididymis - MESE.

The traumatic nature of open access is relative, as the operation is performed under local or general anesthesia (at the request of the patient), through a tiny incision, which, after receiving the germ cells, is closed with an invisible cosmetic suture. During the recovery period, which is 1.5 weeks, the patient is advised to avoid:

  • physical activity;
  • sexual intercourse.

If the IVF program is performed on the same day, fresh material is used. In the case of a delayed program, sperm is cryopreserved.

Preparation and course of the procedure

Follow your doctor's recommendations before the procedure.

Features of the procedure

The absence of spermatozoa in semen (azoospermia) occurs in 2% of men and is caused by:

  • infection, inflammation, and STDs;
  • operations performed in the genitourinary system and pelvic organs;
  • malignant neoplasms and narrowing of the vas deferens;
  • genetic diseases;
  • bad habits.

In infertile men, azoospermia is diagnosed in 10-15% of cases of fertility disorders. In 50% of cases, the cause of azoospermia cannot be determined.

Another cause of male infertility is impaired sperm output - anejaculation, which, in addition to the above factors, is caused by:

  • therapy with the use of antihypertensive, antipsychotic drugs and antidepressants;
  • diseases of the endocrine system, hormonal imbalance, metabolic disorders;
  • pathologies of the nervous system (Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, autonomic neuropathy);
  • injuries of the spine and pelvic organs;
  • intoxication and work in harmful conditions;
  • exposure to ionizing radiation.

If it is not possible to obtain sperm naturally, various types of biopsies of the epididymis or testicles are used.
