Клініка репродуктивної медицини IVMED > cryotechnology > Cryopreservation of embryos
Embryo cryopreservation is the safe storage of embryos at ultra-low temperatures to be used in future programs IVF PROGRAMS. Thanks to the use of vitrification (instant freezing without the formation of ice crystals), embryos are not damaged and remain viable for an unlimited period of time. This technology gives couples reproductive freedom: to preserve their reproductive potential, to undergo genetic testing of embryos if necessary, and to become parents at the most favorable time for them.
This procedure is often recommended for this purpose:
1. After the IVF cycle, there are quality embryos left
If several high-quality embryos are obtained in the IVF protocol, they can be frozen for further attempts at artificial insemination.
2. The need for preimplantation genetic testing (PGT-A)
On the fifth day of embryo development, when the embryo is in the blastocyst stage, PGT-A can be performed as part of an artificial insemination program. After the embryo cells are taken for analysis, the blastocyst is frozen for the duration of the test. This makes it possible to identify possible chromosomal abnormalities and genetic diseases in the embryo in order to transfer the healthiest one to the uterus and significantly increase the chances of having a healthy baby.
3. Need to postpone pregnancy
The endometrium may not be ready for implantation due to certain diseases or the appearance of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome after ovulation induction in the IVF cycle. In this situation gynecologist recommends postponing the embryo transfer and cryopreserving the blastocyst to transfer it to the uterus after the endometrium or the patient's overall health has normalized. Postponement of pregnancy may be necessary in the case of serious illnesses in a woman or man, during the treatment of which pregnancy is impossible or which can potentially lead to loss of fertility. In this way, the couple can preserve their germ cells for parenthood after the condition stabilizes.
4. "Deferred motherhood"
This method is currently relevant and important for couples who are not yet ready to have a child but plan to do so in the future. After all, over time, the reproductive potential of both men and women decreases. The collection of germ cells at a favorable age and the creation of embryos makes it possible to "stop time" and significantly reduce the risk of having a child with chromosomal abnormalities that often occur in late reproductive age.
5. Surrogate motherhood
If a surrogate mother is hired to carry the pregnancy, the embryos of the biological parents are frozen and transferred to her uterus at the scheduled time.
The main advantage of cryotechnology is the ability to preserve reproductive potential by freezing embryos created at a young reproductive age. This significantly increases the likelihood of having a healthy child even after many years. After all, the quality of genetic material (sperm and eggs) physiologically decreases over time, and cryopreserved embryos will be stored in a bank as long as needed without affecting their viability.
Another undoubted advantage is the ability to postpone parenthood if it is not appropriate at a young reproductive age. In this way, fertility can be preserved, in particular before cancer treatment, which can cause infertility.
In addition, embryo cryopreservation is an important part of the following programs infertility treatment programsas it allows for the use of ready-made embryos in subsequent IVF cycles if there have been unsuccessful attempts to get pregnant or if a repeat pregnancy is planned in the future.
A potential disadvantage of this method is the risk of damage to the blastocyst during freezing or thawing. However, the modern method of vitrification eliminates this possibility - in fertility clinic in Kyiv At IVMED, about 80% of embryos survive thawing. Another disadvantage is the price of embryo cryopreservation. In addition to the cost of the procedure itself, it is affected by how many cryotypes are used for storage, as well as the actual time the embryos are stored in the cryobank.
Thanks to the advanced vitrification method we use, more than 80% of embryos successfully survive the thawing process, preserving their viability and potential for implantation.
Embryos are cultured and stored in a modern embryology laboratory equipped with the latest technology. We use only methods recognized by evidence-based medicine. With our own modern genetic laboratory, we offer preimplantation genetic screening to ensure that only healthy embryos are transferred.
We don't work with templates. The entire program is tailored exclusively to your needs and performance. We guarantee the confidentiality of your data and compliance with all legal regulations.
A team of specialists will work for you, committed to one result - the birth of a healthy child.
First of all, the couple undergoes an examination to assess their health status and draw up an individual treatment plan. The woman undergoes hormonal induction of ovulation to obtain several mature oocytes. The ovarian stimulation protocol is discussed during consultations with a reproductive specialist. Oocytes are collected by follicle puncture. The obtained germ cells are fertilized with the sperm of a partner (or donor) using the ICSI method. Fertilized eggs develop in special incubators for 5-7 days until they reach the blastocyst stage, which is optimal for vitrification.
Before the embryos are directly cryopreserved, embryologists carefully assess their quality. If indicated, a biopsy of the trophectoderm (cells of the future placenta) can be performed at the blastocyst stage for PGT-A and selection of genetically healthy embryos.
Cryopreservation of embryos in Kyiv in our clinic is carried out exclusively by the vitrification method, which instantly stops all biological processes in the embryo. This method guarantees the highest survival rate after thawing. First, the blastocysts are placed in a special protective solution - a cryoprotectant. It displaces water from the cells and prevents the formation of ice crystals that can damage the embryos. Each embryo is placed in a special container (cryotope) and immersed in liquid nitrogen. Due to the instantaneous cooling rate, the liquid in the cells turns into a glassy structure rather than ice.
Vitrified embryos are placed for long-term storage in special Dewar vessels filled with liquid nitrogen, where a stable temperature of -196°C is maintained. Under these conditions, blastocysts can be stored indefinitely without loss of quality. After thawing and implantation, such embryos will continue to develop naturally, retaining all their physiological properties.
Embryos can be stored indefinitely. Freezing does not harm the health of the unborn child, and the main success factor is the age of the parents at the time of embryo creation. Sperm cells taken at a young reproductive age (under 35) have the highest chances of a successful pregnancy in the future, regardless of when you decide to use them. In this way, you are actually "preserving time" and your best reproductive potential.
